An artist showcase will take place this weekend at The GLO Center, a Springfield nonprofit that serves the LGBTQ+ community. Organizers say the event is meant to help give a platform to underrepresented artists.

Each artist will get a display and will have art available for purchase. There are going to be 11 queer artists represented this year. Co-presidents of The GLO Center — Arianna Beckham and Megan Block — chose the top artists.

“We chose the art and artists that aligned well with our mission and also offered a diverse art experience. Where we have a lot of different expressions, styles, mediums and backgrounds”, Beckham said.

​

The event is Saturday, Feb. 26 from 2-5 p.m. at The GLO Center on Commercial Street. It’ll be $4 at the door for GLO members and $5 for non-members. Masks are going to be required and, if the weather allows, the outdoor space will be for socializing.

Their mission is to create a more inclusive and accepting community where everyone can thrive and be themselves, according to the organization’s website.

GLO was established in 1996 when a group of local leaders wanted to create a safe place for the entire LGBTQ+ community to meet and gain support through resources, education and advocacy.

“The GLO Center continues hosting the Queer Artist Showcase because it aligns with our mission and values as an organization, especially our value of ‘accessibility,’” Beckham said. “While our town definitely evolved into a more creative experience with the Moon City Creative District in the Woodland Heights area and the anticipated expansion of the Art Museum, we recognize that queer artists are often left off the platform.
